CHARACTERS
THE BUTTER AND EGG MAN by George S. Kaufman
Casting breakdown:
Note: Despite the age descriptions of characters in script, we are hoping to cast ALL characters with actors over age 50 in accordance with our mission statement.
Casting will be color blind. Looking for actors who understand the style of 1920s style New York “Damon Runyon-eske” characters with great comedic sense.
PETER JONES: (lead) in the original production described as a boy of 21 or so, so he should exude an air of innocence, likable, simple, naive
JOE LEHMAN: (lead) driven, energetic would-be Broadway producer, fast talking, gruff, cigar chomping
JACK McCLURE: (large supporting role) Lehman’s partner, only a little less brash
FANNY LEHMAN: (large supporting role) Joe’s wise cracking wife, former burlesque/vaudeville performer
JANE WESTON: (lead) becomes Peter’s romantic interest, should project youthful spirit, honest & sincere
MARY MARTIN: (large supporting role) (we will change the name of this character—the play was written before the real Mary Martin appeared on the scene): slightly over-the-hill Broadway actress, self important
BERNIE SAMPSON: (supporting) know-it-all phony would-be Broadway sophisticate
PEGGY MARLOWE: (one scene, supporting) wise-cracking chorus girl
KITTY HUMPHREYS: (one scene, supporting) attractive, flirtatious switchboard operator
The following roles will be doubled. (Large supporting) Both are a great opportunity to show versatility. Seeking actors who can make each role a distinctly different character:
