Artistic Director (Volunteer Position)

About the Company:
Out of the Box Theatre Company’s is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization with a mission to feature working theater professionals at their peak and in their prime: seasoned actors, directors, and designers primarily past 50 years of age, providing opportunity and freedom to work outside the restrictions of age, race, sex, and disability; to present new interpretations of period plays and contemporary classics, mainly works over 50 years old; and, when appropriate, to incorporate live music performances to enhance the mood and as between-scenes entertainment. An important part of the mission is to provide live theater to the growing low-income and disabled population who might not attend theater otherwise by donating at least 25% of the tickets to low-income senior citizens.
About this Pro Bono Role:
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated artistic director to create a long term artistic vision for Out of the Box Theatre Company and help us achieve our artistic goals. The successful candidate will work with the production team and the board, as well as select plays that fit within Out of the Box’s mission. The successful candidate also will recommend directors, be engaged with the creative team and cultivate donors. They will be an essential member of the board of directors and be able to work closely with its members, ensuring that our productions are financially viable and sustainable, while maintaining our artistic integrity and vision.

In your cover letter, please include a sample season that you would propose for Out of the Box. We typically do two live productions and one benefit performance (since the pandemic, the benefit has been online).

- Developing and creating a long-term artistic plan for the company
- Selecting plays, working closely with directors, designers, and actors
- Being engaged with all aspects of production, from casting to final performance
- Work within the constraints of established budgets
- Building and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders, including funders, partners, and audiences
- Staying up to date with the latest trends and developments in the theater industry
- Supporting the company's commitment to diversity and belonging
- Significant experience working in theater production, including directing, casting, and donor cultivation
- Proven track record of artistic excellence and innovation
- Strong leadership and management skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate creative teams
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Understanding of budgetary process and nonprofit financial requirements and limitations
- Familiarity with union requirements and rules (Actors Equity, SSDC, etc.)
- Become a member of the board of directors
- Be a team member and get along with people
