"Trifles" by Susan Gladspell
"Trifles" begins as the county attorney, the sheriff, Mr. Hale, Mrs. Peters, and Mrs. Hale enter the Wrights' empty farm house. On prompting from the county attorney, Mr. Hale recounts his visit to the house the previous day, when he found Mrs. Wright behaving strangely and found her husband upstairs with a rope around his neck, dead. Mr. Hale notes that, when he questioned her, Mrs. Wright claimed that she was fast asleep when someone strangled her husband. Often hailed as one of the quintessential feminist plays, "Trifles" earned Glaspell a Pulitzer Prize and renewed literary recognition.
Casting breakdown:
Note: Despite the age descriptions of characters in script, we are hoping to cast ALL characters with actors over age 50 in accordance with our mission statement.
George Henderson: The county attorney.
Henry Peters: Local sheriff and husband of Mrs. Peters.
Lewis Hale: Neighbor of the Wrights and husband to Mrs. Hale.
Mrs. Peters: Wife of the sheriff.
Mrs. Hale: Neighbor of the Wrights and wife of Lewis Hale.
-------
"The Greenhouse" by Robert Karmon
A surreal, dark comedy, which finds two strangers meeting on a perhaps blind date in a restaurant, and the power struggle that ensues.
Casting breakdown:
NICK: SINISTERLY HANDSOME. HIDING BEHIND DARK GLASSES AS IF HE MAY OR MAY NOT BE BLIND. HE MOVES WITH SHORT BIRD-LIKE GESTURES.
JANICE: ATTRACTIVE BUT WARY AND INSECURE. SHE IS HUNGRY FOR ATTENTION.
WOMAN: A BIT TOO HEADSTRONG, CONFIDENT AND EAGER. SHE TRIES TO COVER UP HER VULNERABILITY.
