*****PLEASE NOTE: It is the mission of Out of the Box to cast actors outside the restrictions of age, primarily over the age of 50 when possible.
Nelson Bond’s adaptation of George Orwell’s ANIMAL FARM is a satirical, political fable about a Dream-come-true descending into a Nightmare. Set in a “mythical barnyard far away”, we are invited to travel along with “The Animals” who live there; and whose aspirations, ambitions, faults and virtues mirror our own so closely, that at times it’s difficult to distinguish those who walk on four legs from those who walk on two. This insightful, funny, frightening play winds its way on a journey through a world of subjugation, inspiration, liberation, exploitation, and eventually resignation. ANIMAL FARM is a cautionary tale “As Old As Time” … and as relevant “As Tonight’s Evening News.”

CHARACTERS, CHARACTER BREAKDOWNS & SIDES
Click on the Character Breakdown links to view the character breakdown.

All 8 Character Breakdowns

Most of the roles (characters) have two sides for the auditioning actors to consider.

Each of the 8 actors in this play needs to be able utilize and transform both the 3rd person descriptive narrative taken directly from the novel, as well as the imbedded lines of scripted dialogue that are incorporated into the script, in order to bring his or her roles to life as specific and distinguishable characters. ☆

Although ANIMAL FARM is not a musical, there will be some choral singing by the entire ensemble. No one needs to be a vocal virtuoso. But all actors must be comfortable singing and should be prepared sing a little something unaccompanied at the audition, to allow the director to identify their vocal range. The song can be as simple as a chorus of "Happy Birthday."

If the Actor is responsible for duel or multiple roles, the actor should be prepared to audition with a side for each of characters that that Actor will be responsible to bring to life.
